The bottom line

Acuity home insurance stands out for its extensive optional coverages, a strong customer service track record, and one of the best policy bundling packages we’ve come across. If you’re interested in homeowners insurance that can be customized for your specific needs, then you may not have to look much further than Acuity. With up to 12 policy endorsements — including guaranteed replacement cost, underground service lines coverage, and earthquake protection — Acuity can help you fill in crucial coverage gaps and ensure you’re fully protected against the unexpected.

Perhaps what we love most about Acuity is its Road and Residence program, which features both a sizable policy discount and several coverage enhancements if you bundle your home and car insurance with Acuity. In addition to an average bundling discount of 20%, replacement cost personal property and increased personal valuables coverage come standard in bundled home insurance policies. And you only need to pay a single deductible on claims involving both your home and car.

A couple of potential downsides with Acuity is that it’s only available in 26 states, and its premiums are higher than the national average. And while Acuity offers potentially significant savings when you bundle, it doesn’t appear to offer many other discounts beyond that.

Pros

  • Guaranteed replacement cost dwelling coverage available

  • Exceptional customer service and informational content

  • Bundling package includes several perks and incentives

Cons

  • Rates are higher than the national average

  • Limited discount options

  • Only available in 26 states

Basic coverages offered

Acuity home insurance policies include these six basic coverages to protect your home, belongings, and liability.

  • Dwelling: Pays to rebuild or repair the structure of your home, such as the roof, floors, walls, built-in appliances, and any structures attached to the home.

  • Other structures: Pays to rebuild or repair additional structures on your property that aren’t attached to your home, like a detached garage or gardening shed.

  • Personal property: Covers the costs of repairing or replacing your personal belongings, such as furniture, clothes, electronics, and other possessions you own.

  • Loss of use: Helps cover the cost of hotel stays, restaurant meals, pet boarding costs, and other temporary living expenses while your house is being rebuilt or repaired after a covered loss.

  • Personal liability: Covers medical and legal expenses in the event you’re legally responsible for an accidental injury or property damage.

  • Medical payments: Pays for guests’ medical expenses if they’re injured in your home, regardless of who is at fault.

Additional coverages offered

Consider adding the following coverages to your Acuity homeowners insurance policy for an additional cost.

  • Guaranteed replacement cost: In the event your house is badly damaged or destroyed by a covered loss, this covers 100% of rebuild costs — regardless of your policy limits.

  • Personal property replacement cost: If your belongings are stolen or damaged by a covered peril, this covers the cost of new items without deducting depreciation from your claim payment.

  • Coverage enhancements plus: Extends coverage for your personal belongings to include causes of loss not normally covered, like mysterious disappearance. Also covers things like changing house locks if you misplace your keys and replacing spoiled food after a power outage.

  • Service line: Pays for everything from excavation to repair costs if underground water pipes or electrical lines are damaged.

  • Sewer or drain backup: If your house is water damaged because of a sewer pipe or drain backup, this can help cover the cost of repairs.

  • Equipment breakdown: If a household appliance is damaged because of a sudden mechanical, electrical, or pressure systems breakdown, this covers the cost of replacement or repairs.

  • Matching siding: If the siding on your home is damaged by a covered peril and replaced with new siding, this covers the additional cost of replacing the undamaged siding so everything matches.

  • Scheduled personal property: Increases coverage limits on individual valuable items that often come with low per-item limits on a standard policy. In most cases, you’ll need to provide Acuity with the appraised value of the scheduled item.

  • Valuable personal property: Increases coverage limits on expensive valuables or heirloom items like jewelry, fine art, and musical instruments on a blanket basis.

  • Home business: Provides increased coverage limits for business property (normally limited to $2,500 total) if you work from home, run a business out of your home, or use a building on your property to store inventory. Also extends your policy’s liability protection to your home business.

  • Identity fraud and cyber protection: If your identity is stolen or you suffer other cyber losses, this coverage can help pay for professional identity recovery assistance, legal fees, and loss of income during the recovery process.

  • Earthquake protection: A coverage add-on that covers damage to your home, other structures, and personal belongings if they’re damaged by an earthquake or volcanic eruption. This endorsement is not available in all states.

  • Umbrella insurance: If you have a liability claim that exceeds your liability coverage limit, umbrella insurance kicks in to cover the additional costs.

Ratings methodology

Price

4.1/5

Acuity does well on our price rating scale thanks to its policy pricing that’s about in line with what the average person pays for homeowners insurance. Based on our rate analysis of over 100 insurance companies in every U.S. state and ZIP code, Acuity rates are about 8% higher than the national average. However, keep in mind that your rates will depend mainly on your location, your home’s age and build, how much coverage you need, and whether you’re eligible for one of Acuity’s six possible discounts.

Customer experience

4.2/5

Acuity wasn’t included in any of the three J.D. Power studies we considered for this category, so its high customer experience rating is based solely on customer complaint data with the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC). From 2019 to 2021, Acuity received about 74% less complaints than a comparable company of its size, according to the NAIC National Customer Complaint Index Report. Acuity’s website also features an extensive library of educational resources and tools for its customers, including state-specific guides to policy coverages, claims, safety tips, and more. While this didn’t factor into Acuity’s rating, it may help explain its low number of complaints and high ratings with Trustpilot.

Coverage options

3.7/5

Acuity scores above average on our coverage options rating scale thanks to the 12 optional coverages it offers that can provide you with both peace of mind and superior protection. By adding guaranteed replacement cost to your policy (for as little as $25 a year, according to Acuity), you can rest assured knowing your home is covered for a full rebuild even if the costs exceed your policy limits. Acuity also offers several additional lines of personal insurance, including condo, auto, boat, and umbrella insurance. However, it does not appear to offer flood insurance.

Financial strength

4.1/5

Acuity Insurance holds an A+ rating with AM Best, which means it has a “superior” ability to fulfill its financial obligations. While it also has an A+ with Standard & Poor’s, its corresponding “upper medium grade” credit designation appears a bit further down on the S&P rating scale compared to that of AM Best. While Acuity’s S&P rating is a little lower than the average insurer, it still does well on our financial strength rating scale and has a strong ability to pay out the claims of its customers in the event of an economic downturn.

How much does Acuity Insurance home insurance cost?

The national average cost of an Acuity home insurance policy is $2,058 per year for a policy with $300,000 in dwelling coverage. This makes Acuity Insurance about 8% more expensive than the national average.

However, your own rates will depend on your home’s location and how much coverage you need. Here’s the average yearly cost of Acuity Insurance for five different levels of dwelling coverage:

What discounts does Acuity offer?

Acuity’s website lists six available home insurance discounts that can help you lower your home insurance rates. Keep in mind that more or fewer discount options may be available to you depending on your state of residence.

  • Road and Residence: If you bundle home and auto insurance policies with Acuity Insurance, you can save an average of 20% on premiums. Acuity’s bundling package also comes with several coverage enhancements and benefits, such as automatic replacement cost personal property coverage, higher coverage limits on expensive valuables, and single-deductible claims on losses involving both your home and car.

  • Fire protection systems: If you have smoke detectors, fire alarms, extinguishers, sprinklers, or any device that prevents fire from spreading.

  • Smart home systems: If you have a qualifying smart home system installed in your home.

  • Newer home: If the house you’re insuring is under a certain number of years old.

  • Mature homebuyer: If you or your spouse are over 55 years old and retired.

  • Paid-in-full: If you pay your premiums for the year up front. Although this discount does not apply to homeowners who pay through their escrow account.
