Methodology & why you can trust our rates

Policygenius has analyzed car insurance rates provided by Quadrant Information Services for every ZIP code in all 50 states plus Washington, D.C. For full coverage policies, the following coverage limits were used:

  • Bodily injury liability: 50/100

  • Property damage liability: $50,000

  • Uninsured/underinsured motorist: 50/100

  • Comprehensive: $500 deductible

  • Collision: $500 deductible

In some cases, additional coverages were added where required by state or insurer.

Rates for overall average rate, rates by ZIP code, and cheapest companies determined using averages for single drivers ages 30, 35, and 45. Our sample vehicle was a 2017 Toyota Camry LE driven 10,000 miles/year.

Rates for driving violations and “Poor” credit determined using average rates for a single male 30-year-old driver with a credit score under 578.

Some carriers may be represented by affiliates or subsidiaries. Rates provided are a sample of costs. Your actual quotes may differ.

Cheapest car insurance companies in Idaho

Every car insurance company uses the same factors when calculating your rates, like your age, ZIP code, credit score and driving history, but they all have different ways of putting those factors together.

That’s why no two companies are the same, and you shouldn't assume that your current policy is the best deal. Shopping around before you buy or renew a policy can save you hundreds of dollars a year.

Buying car insurance in Idaho

All Idaho drivers must meet the state required minimums for coverage. Idaho requires at least the following amounts of liability car insurance:

  • Bodily injury liability coverage per person: $25,000

  • Bodily injury liability coverage per accident: $50,000

  • Property damage liability coverage: $15,000

Idaho is an at fault state when it comes to car accidents. That means that the driver found responsible for an accident is also responsible for paying for the other party’s medical bills and repair costs.

Your liability coverage is what pays after an accident, but if you don’t have high enough liability limits to pay for the damage you’ve caused, you’ll be personally responsible for the rest, which is why it’s important to get more than the required minimum amounts of coverage.

How to get cheap car insurance in Idaho

If your car insurance seems too expensive, try these tips for finding your most affordable rates:

  • Ask about discounts, like savings for safe drivers or certain professions

  • Bundle your auto and home or renters policies with the same company

  • Reduce coverage on older cars

  • Drive safely and avoid moving violations

  • Review and compare your car insurance every year to make sure you’re still getting the best rates
