The bottom line

MetLife no longer offers auto insurance. In 2021 MetLife sold its property and casualty business to the Farmers Insurance Group.

That means MetLife stopped accepting new auto customers, and its existing auto policyholders now receive coverage and claims support from Farmers (MetLife is still a life insurance company, and also offers dental, vision, pet, accident, and disability insurance).

Drivers didn’t have to stick with Farmers if their policies were transferred from MetLife, but it might be a good idea. We awarded Farmers auto insurance 4.4 out of 5 stars thanks to its coverage offerings and strong customer service.

Who bought MetLife auto insurance?

Farmers Insurance purchased MetLife’s auto and home insurance business in 2021. When the sale took place, MetLife transitioned its car and home insurance policyholders to Farmers, keeping their coverage levels and rates the same.

Old MetLife car insurance policyholders would have received updated rates and coverage options once it was time to renew their existing policies with Farmers.

Does MetLife insurance still exist?

Although it no longer offers auto insurance, MetLife still exists. You can still get life, health, dental, vision, disability, and pet insurance from MetLife. If you were someone who bundled their car insurance with another one of these forms of coverage before MetLife’s sale, those policies wouldn't have been affected.

Information for former MetLife policyholders

Former MetLife policyholders with questions about their car insurance should contact Farmers. Drivers can download the Farmers app or check the company’s website to manage their policy, report a claim, and contact a customer service representative to ask questions about their coverage.

Alternatively, drivers can call Farmers at 800-435-7764 to make a claim over the phone. They can also contact the company's general customer service line at 888-327-6335.
