The bottom line

Texas Farm Bureau is a top car insurance company in Texas and a go-to option for Texas drivers. When it comes to overall customer satisfaction, Texas Farm Bureau has been the top-rated car insurance company in Texas on the annual J.D. Power U.S. Auto Insurance Study for eleven consecutive years.

Texas Farm Bureau is part of the American Farm Bureau Federation, a national farming advocacy group with a network of state affiliates. Only Texas Farm Bureau members can get Texas Farm Bureau insurance, but anyone can get a membership. You will need to pay a membership fee that’s separate from your insurance premiums, but the membership cost may vary by county.

Texas Farm Bureau offers the standard types of car insurance most drivers need, including liability, comprehensive, and collision coverage, but it only offers a few additional types of auto coverage, including roadside assistance, rental car coverage, and a death indemnity benefit.

Texas Farm Bureau has some of the lowest rates in the industry, but it offers fewer coverage options than some other insurance companies and does not offer gap coverage. Despite its limited coverage options, Texas Farm Bureau is a good choice for many drivers based on its low rates, multiple discounts, and high customer service scores.

Pros

  • Lower-than-average rates

  • Offers a death indemnity benefit

  • Owned by its policyholders

Cons

  • Only available in Texas

  • Limited coverage options

  • Texas Farm Bureau membership required

Basic coverages offered

  • Liability coverage: Covers the cost of bodily injuries or property damage you cause to someone else in an at fault accident. Liability coverage is required in almost every state.

  • Personal injury protection: Also referred to as PIP or no-fault insurance, personal injury protection covers medical expenses (and other costs, like lost wages and funeral benefits) if you or your passengers are hurt in an accident, no matter who was at fault. PIP coverage is required in some states.

  • Uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage: Also known as UM/UIM, uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage pays for your medical expenses if you’re hit by a driver who doesn’t have insurance, or doesn’t have enough insurance to cover your medical expenses, or, in some cases, the damage to your car. UM/UIM is required coverage in some states.

  • Collision coverage: Covers damage to your vehicle after a car accident, whether or not you were at fault.

  • Comprehensive coverage: Covers non-collision damage to your car, including damage caused by extreme weather, hail, flood, fire, falling objects, vandalism and theft.

  • Medical payments: Also known as MedPay, this covers medical costs for you and your passengers if you get into a covered accident, but the benefit is usually small, between $1,000 and $10,000.

Additional coverages offered

  • Death indemnity coverage: Pays a set dollar amount to a beneficiary if a person who is covered by your Texas Farm Bureau auto insurance is fatally injured in a car accident.

  • Rental coverage: Helps cover the cost of a rental car while yours is being repaired after a covered loss.

  • Roadside assistance coverage: Covers fuel delivery, locksmith services, towing, winching, battery jumpstarts, and flat tires.

Texas Farm Bureau does not offer gap coverage, so drivers who have a lease or loan on their vehicle may need to purchase gap coverage elsewhere.

Ratings methodology

Price

4.6/5

We used data provided by Quadrant to compare the average cost of a full coverage policy from Texas Farm Bureau (50/100/50 coverage limits and $500 deductibles for comprehensive and collision coverage) to competitor rates for the same coverage with the same driver profile (single drivers aged 30, 35, and 45 driving a 2017 Toyota Camry LE about 10,000 miles per year).

Customer experience

4.7/5

Texas Farm Bureau does not have a score on J.D. Power’s 2022 U.S. Auto Claims Satisfaction Study or the J.D. Power 2022 U.S. Insurance Digital Experience Study. However, Texas Farm Bureau is ranked number one on the J.D. Power 2022 U.S. Auto Insurance Study in the state of Texas. And according to the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) National Complaint Index Report, Texas Farm Bureau also had significantly fewer customer complaints than average in 2021.

Coverage options

2.7/5

Texas Farm Bureau offers 10 different types of auto insurance coverage, giving it a low score when it comes to coverage options. Beyond the standard auto insurance coverage types, including liability, comprehensive, and collision coverage, Texas Farm Bureau only offers roadside assistance, death indemnity coverage, and rental car reimbursement.

Financial strength

3.6/5

Texas Farm Bureau has good financial ratings, scoring an A with AM Best.  However, Texas Farm Bureau doesn’t have a rating with S&P or Moody’s. This means Texas Farm Bureau is in a good financial position to pay out its customers’ claims.

How much does Texas Farm Bureau auto insurance cost?

Texas Farm Bureau auto insurance costs an average of $87 a month, or $1,041 a year. That makes Texas Farm Bureau car insurance much less expensive than competitors for a full-coverage policy with bodily injury liability limits of $50,000 per person and $100,000 per accident.
